Why accessible websites work better for everyone

Teams that test early save themselves rework later.

Digital accessibility affects far more people than most teams assume: a temporary injury after surgery, low vision with age, or simply a phone screen in bright sunlight. Designing for the edges makes the page better for everyone — more in our guide to WCAG 2.2.

Accessibility isn’t a feature you tick off — it’s a default you never have to switch off again.

The most common barriers are often the simplest: too little contrast, missing focus indicators, forms without labels. None of them require a rebuild — most issues can be fixed with targeted changes, complemented by an assistive widget like friendlyuse for everything visitors want to adjust themselves.

A good first step is an automated scan: it finds the biggest violations in seconds and hands your team a prioritised list. Combined with real user testing, this becomes a process that fits into existing sprints instead of blowing them up — details in our testing guide.

Why accessibility?

Fewer barriers between a visit and an action.

Accessibility helps people perceive content and use digital services independently. The widget gives visitors immediate display controls—as a complement to auditing, engineering and editorial work, not a replacement for them.

How it works

Three steps
to the widget on your website.

Add your domain in the dashboard, drop in the script, and give your visitors instant controls for text, contrast, reading and navigation.

01Embed

Add one line of JavaScript before </body>.

Works with any CMS or custom frontend. No build step and no template changes needed.

// before </body>
<script src="https://app.friendlyuse.com/widget/widget.js"
data-token="fu_xxxxx"></script>
02Activate

The script validates your domain and shows the button.

The token is bound to your domain. Visitors open the panel in the bottom right and pick the aids they need.

FAQ

Questions teams ask
before they sign.

The answers describe the current launch scope: widget, dashboard, usage measurement and scanner.

What is an accessibility widget?

An accessibility widget is a script-embedded control panel that lets website visitors adjust the presentation themselves – font size, contrast, reading aids or stopping animations. It complements technical accessibility under WCAG 2.2 but does not replace it: legal requirements such as the EAA and Germany's BFSG also demand an accessible foundation. That is why friendlyuse combines the widget with an automated scanner and monitoring.

Is friendlyuse a widget or a real solution?

friendlyuse is first and foremost an accessibility widget with a dashboard. Your visitors can adjust font, contrast, reading aids and other settings themselves. In the dashboard you manage domains, embedding, usage and billing.

Will this slow down my website?

The widget is embedded as its own script and runs separately from your website. Visitor settings are stored locally, so the page appears the way they configured it on their next visit.

Does this really make me BFSG- or EAA-compliant?

A widget does not replace a full WCAG audit and is not a guarantee of legal compliance. But it improves usability for visitors and complements your own accessibility work with directly usable aids.

Where is my data stored?

Visitor preferences live in the browser. For usage statistics, friendlyuse counts unique monthly visitors in a privacy-friendly way via a hash, without storing raw IP addresses.

How is friendlyuse different from accessibility overlays?

We deliberately position friendlyuse as a visitor widget and scanner, not as an automatic legal guarantee. The clear boundary matters: the script helps people on your website but does not replace solid product development.

What happens if I cancel?

If the script is removed or a domain is deactivated, the widget no longer appears. Your HTML stays unchanged, because friendlyuse is embedded as a separate layer.
