Note

This page is carefully researched but does not replace individual legal advice.

Why these notes matter

Customers embed the friendlyuse widget via a script on their own website. This causes friendlyuse code to run on the customer's domain, settings to be stored in the visitor's browser, and pseudonymised usage statistics to be processed for plan measurement and product analysis.

The customer decides whether and on which domains the script is used. The customer must therefore inform their own website visitors about the widget embedding in their privacy policy and, where required, in device-related notices.

Technical embedding

The widget is embedded via a script, for example: <script src="https://app.friendlyuse.com/widget/widget.js" data-token="fu_xxxxx"></script>.

The token is used to validate the registered domain and prevent abuse. Tokens must not be shared publicly outside the intended script context or used on unregistered domains.

Local storage in the browser

The widget stores accessibility preferences chosen by the visitor — such as font size, contrast, reading ruler, or similar settings — in the browser's localStorage.

This storage is functionally necessary so that the accessibility preferences actively set by the visitor are re-applied on their next page load. Under the current product concept, this storage does not serve advertising tracking purposes.

Visitor metering and usage statistics

For visitor-based plans, friendlyuse counts unique monthly visitors per domain via a salted SHA-256 hash of IP address, user agent, and domain. Repeated visits by the same person within a month are therefore not double-counted under the product concept.

Raw IP addresses are not permanently stored for this metric under the current product concept. Technical events may additionally be processed to identify which widget features are used and whether the widget is functioning correctly.

Sample text for customer pages

We use the friendlyuse accessibility widget to provide visitors with assistive features such as larger text, contrast adjustments, a reading ruler, and further display options. The provider is Peter Csipkay, friendlyuse, Germany.

The widget stores your chosen settings locally in your browser so that they can be re-applied on your next visit. In addition, friendlyuse processes pseudonymised technical usage data, in particular for domain validation, error analysis, plan measurement, and improving widget functionality.

Processing, insofar as it concerns our website, is carried out on the basis of our legitimate interest in a more accessible and user-friendly website. Further information can be found in the friendlyuse privacy policy at https://friendlyuse.com/datenschutz.

Note on consent

Whether the widget must be included in a consent banner depends on the specific implementation, the features enabled, and the customer's own legal assessment.

Under the current product concept, the storage of visitor preferences is functionally oriented towards the requested accessibility feature. Customers should nevertheless check whether their consent management platform requires a separate category for localStorage access, external scripts, or statistical functions.
